Back in Action tells the tale of two CIA agents, Matt and Emily, who are specialists and, unfortunately, are made to retire during a high-profile operation. They choose to live the life of an average married couple and look after their children until someone finds out their real identities and the tranquil life gets disrupted by the news.

The couple is drawn again to the world of secret missions, and now they go with their children. Their mission is to recover the most superior item in terms of technology that has been buried for years. While they are facing the dangers of international terrorism, they also have to keep the children safe from the enemy sector. However, they also need to save their children from the hands of terrorists in the midst of preventing 'the key' from being their weapon of destruction.

A Synopsis of "Back in Action"

The film starts by showing us Matt and Emily's past mission where they were sent to "find the key." They are sent home empty-handed, only to get shot at on their way home. Forced into retirement as their previous life of fifteen years is after them, they get back into their secretive way of life. When their kids are taken away, the case obvious, Matt and Emily intensify their scheme, and they need to find and then use their powers to save them and at the same time, prevent a bunch of terrorists from making a mistake that will put their lives in danger.

It definitely mixes action and a little bit of lighthearted humor because at the end of the day, it is a film that explores the influence a family has. Their closeness as a family is the main highlight; Foxx's and Diaz's roles of being parents are versus the fumbling but still being the spies. Apart from the fact that it is an action comedy, the film thoroughly discusses the themes of self-renunciation, love, and sacrificing for the sake of a family.

The film is quite straightforward in showing its enthusiasm and this is in addition to several scenes that are truly hilarious. However, others were not pleased with the film being a by-the-numbers action comedy that was quite basic and had next to no creativity.
