Atlantics

The story of Atlantics is about Ada, a young woman in Dakar, who is in love with Souleiman, a construction worker. Ada has struck up the deepest relationship with Jane, but is set to marry another man, in marriage that has been arranged. At a time when workers like Souleiman do not earn a cent, the leader decides to attempt to cross the sea to Europe in the hopes of finding a better life.

Strange events occur in Dakar after their departure and there are mysterious fires and ghostly sightings. Haunted by the loss of Souleiman, Baba's corpse comes back, and Ada is dragged into a supernatural mystery that bends the rules between the living and the dead.

Atlantics Movie Explained

The intention was that the narrative would be elliptical and that slightly loose, which suits the director’s vision. Exploitation, migration or the struggle for identity and agency there are also things deeper that are explored with the supernatural elements. The young men's disappearances, along with the supernatural habits seen later in the film, can be taken as a metaphor for the systemic wrong and the human price of capitalist exploitation. An equally impressive scene shows Ada being subjected to a virginity test in the presence of the patriarchal and religious structures that keep women oppressed.

Atlantics Movie Reviews

The genres in Atlantics are unique while the social commentary is reach. Film critic Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times praised the film for its exquisite beauty and its way of distilling complex ideas into suggestive pictures. On the other hand, he also mentioned that the film’s loose structure in the narrative might be aggravating for people who desire a more coherent and clear text.

The Ringer described Atlantics as "the year's saddest ghost story," highlighting its emotional depth and lyrical quality.

Netflix started streaming Atlantics on November 29th, 2019 and that global audience had access to the movie. This film’s reach has been widened to viewers who may not have encountered it in theaters, due to the platform’s availability of the same. The film has also been recognized and successful internationally due to Netflix’s distribution.

Atlantics Movie Hindi Dubbed

Based on Wolof with English subtitles, Atlantics has no Hindi dubbed version as such. In the case of India and other Hindi-speaking countries, the viewers can enjoy the film with subtitles.
