Jigra (2024 Indian Hindi-language dark action thriller starring Alia Bhatt) tells the story of two close siblings. The film, which came streaming on Netflix from 6th December 2024, is a gripping tale about Satya (Alia Bhatt), a scrappy sister who has a lethal resolve to save her bro Ankur (Vedang Raina) from a foreign prison where he has been put behind bars and sentenced to death on wrong charges.

The story goes on to Satya and Ankur, siblings, who have endured many ordeals. After their orphaning, they are put under the care of rich, distant relatives. Satya, despite her brother, works as a house staff manager and knows the family’s secrets. However, Ankur is a rule-abiding engineer.

When Kabir, the son of the family who is a drug addict, enters, he completely changes the lives of these two siblings. Now Ankur trusts Kabir, so Kabir presents computer software development, which needs a sponsor, to the traditional source of the money: Kabir’s father. Ankur, however, is wrongly accused and is put in jail by Hanshi Dao.

Determining to save her brother, Satya embarks on a perilous quest to reach Hanshi Dao. In goes Melrose, who burns her uncle’s office, and persuades former gangster Bhatia and ex-policeman Muthu to break into the prison for her. Satya’s extreme efforts to free Ankur are indicated through the film, however, this crucial story is drenched with its complex legal and social situations.

Critics and audiences have generally given mixed-to-positive reviews for Jigra. The movie has received an overwhelming 69% positive score out of 16 critics on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 5.5/10. News18 commented about how the audacious and trailblazing nature of the film, while Filmfare appreciated the film for its strong performances and intricate storytelling.

But the film’s narrative did not go unchecked, and some accused it of jumping the rails. All three, Tushar Joshi of India Today, Eshita Bhargava of Financial Express, Dhaval Roy of The Times of India, found that the story lacked impact because its linearity and style took precedence over substance. The Indian Express and The Statesman’s Shubhra Gupta criticised the predictable storyline and lack of emotional depth in the film.

Theatrically, Jigra was released worldwide on October 11, 2024, which was also Vijayadashami. From December 6, 2024, the film started streaming on Netflix for a global audience. Jigra found its true home on the streaming platform, where it could communicate with a broader audience.

Jigra Movie Hindi Dubbed

Jigra is available in Hindi, providing an opportunity for a greater number of audience members to view it. Drawing attention for its strong performances and emotional core, the Hindi version of the film, in particular, has Alia Bhatt’s Satya to thank, with the actress’s portrayal of the young warrior becoming an apparent crowd-pleaser.

Is It Good?

A combination of drama, action, and a shoot of emotional depth, Jigra is a film. Although there are some outstanding scenes thanks to Alia Bhatt's iconic performance and skillfully done action scenes, the film's disorganized plot and subplot always triumph over its content, undoing this one. While films of its sort usually get some goodwill from the fact that an accomplished auteur touches emotional themes with surprising depth, the film is unfortunately weighed down by its linear plot and telegraphed storyline.

Jigra is a film, both in terms of its strong performances and emotional depth, and both for its narrative and pacing, that is difficult to dismiss. It is up to you to decide whether to watch it or not: if you are the kind of person who likes action heartthrob combined with a strong emotional core.
