Warlock of Dusk Full Movie: WARLOCK, which was completed in 1989 and published worldwide, had its American debut in 1991. WARLOCK, directed by Steve Miner, who began his career working on the FRIDAY THE 13TH films, wants to be more than other horror films, but accomplishes very little. In 1691 Boston, a warlock (Julian Sands) is imprisoned by God-fearing residents of a tiny village.
His primary foe is Giles Redferne (Richard E. Grant), whose faith seems to have kept Satan’s messenger at bay. However, when the warlock seeks assistance from his infernal lord. He is sent far away from his tormentors, to modern-day Los Angeles. The catch is that Redferne is swept along with him. The warlock fits perfectly in with 20th-century America. And he goes about performing a massive spell that will swing the cosmic balance toward evil and chaos.
Redferne sets out to stop him. But he’s much less at ease in a world where the devil seems to have already triumphed. Redferne forms an uncomfortable partnership with Kassandra (Lori Singer), a cheerful valley girl who has the misfortune to meet paths with the warlock. He curses her, causing her to age years in hours, and if she can’t locate him and remove the spell, she’ll die within days.
The mismatched Kassandra and Redferne grow to trust and respect each other. And together they send the warlock back to hell, saving the world from an unparalleled reign of evil. To its credit, WARLOCK is not a stalk-and-slash picture, but it isn’t a successful supernatural horror thriller by any means.
One would not expect rationality to rule a film about time-traveling demon worshipers. Films with supernatural elements make up their own rules. But it’s important that those rules are internally consistent. And it helps if they incorporate elements with which the audience is familiar. If you’re making a vampire film and want people to buy in, you have to get the blood, garlic, and sunlight right. The rules of WARLOCK seem to be made up as the game progresses.
This might be because the creators intended to avoid old tropes, yet it appears sloppy and shows a lack of respect for the viewer. Two-thirds of WARLOCK’s main cast is really distinguished: English actors Julian Sands and Richard E. Grant rose to prominence in highly acclaimed films such as A ROOM WITH A VIEW and IMPROMPTU, as well as WITHNAIL & I. HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING.
The third star, American Lori Singer (FOOTLOOSE, TROUBLE IN MIND), is outclassed. But it doesn’t really matter since the writing is so ridiculous that even Sands and Grant can barely get through it. The film features some inventive visual effects (though ratings concerns forced the studio to cut many of the finest ones). But the ineffective aging make-up portraying Kassandra’s curse creates problems–especially since she appears on screen for most of the time as a prominent character. (Violence.)
