The Sherlock TV series is Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’s reinvention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective Sherlock Holmes for the 21st century. First shown on BBC One in 2010, the show was an instant hit around the world for its sharp writing, smart, entertaining plotting and superb acting. Sherlock also left a modern impression with only four seasons and 13 episodes.

A Clever Modern Adaptation

Unlike when we are used to seeing them depicted, Sherlock brings the iconic detective into 21st century London. Set in contemporary London, a young woman is attacked and a string of apparent suicide cases is discovered and investigated by Sherlock Holmes, a consultant detective, and his friend and flatmate Dr. John Watson, played respectively by Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. The cases are shared by Watson, a former military doctor, in a blog where the original stories by Doyle's are cleverly replaced.

While the series remains faithful to the spirit of the classic mysteries, the production has modern technology, urban settings, and fast editing. Sherlock remains humorous, authentic to its source material and current: from mobile phones and GPS tracking, cybercrime and psychological profiling.

Brilliant Performances and Character Chemistry

International acclaim and multiple award nominations were garnered by Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. His performance blends razor sharp intellect, emotional multi faceted core and a little touch of arrogance. Given restraints imposed from the fact that Martin Freeman’s Doctor Watson is a real person; we have Martin Freeman’s Dr. Watson and Dr. Watson provides a grounded, emotionally resonant counterbalance to Sherlock’s eccentric genius.

One of the show’s biggest strengths is the chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman. The series is supported with interesting characters such as Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss) and the terrifying villain Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott).

Critical Acclaim and Awards

Critics praised Sherlock and a fanbase was created. The series itself won numerous awards with Emmys, BAFTAs and Peabody Awards. It was elevated far above the norm of the detective drama with its clever writing, tight direction and cinematic visual. The mini movie of each episode is about 90 minutes.

Amidst these episodes like "A Scandal in Belgravia," "The Reichenbach Fall", and "His Last Vow" of modern television, quarters make mystery, suspense and emotion so unforgettable.

Sherlock was streamed all over the world thanks to streaming platforms such as Netflix. Is Sherlock Coming Back?

While the last episode was aired in 2017, fans are still keenly waiting for a fifth season or at least a special reunion episode. Neither creator nor cast have said otherwise, but both hold an interest.
