A direct sequel to the 1996 stand-alone Twister is Twisters (2024). Lee Isaac Chung directed and Mark L. Smith wrote the film about two groups of storm chasing groups that clash as they probe a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. When Twisters, with a starry cast of Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, Sasha Lane, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, follows in the footsteps of Syfy’s original.

Tornado Alley has a healthy number of storm chasers, and thus Twisters is set there too. The movie establishes Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), the young meteorologist and ambitious Kate, and Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming and senior storm chaser. And then the two with a group of storm chasers determine to catch the most destructive tornado in history. They manage to survive by heading through a treacherous landscape where they run into other groups of chasers, each with its own methods and motives.

It is this case that drives the film's plot with how the tornadoes are intense and how unpredictable they are. The characters must make split second life or death decisions. The tornado in the finale is inspired by real life tornadoes, such as the 2013 El Reno tornado and later the 2021 Western Kentucky tornado, bringing a grounding level of truth to the disaster scenes of the film.

However, critics and audiences have been mixed about Twisters. The film has a rating of 75% (based on 392 reviews) and an average rating of 6.7/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics have almost unanimously applauded the visual effects, with comments like that of Peter Travers of Rolling Stone calling the film 'visually dazzling', and paid particular regards to the performances of Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones (although the latter's role has mostly revolved around effectively alienating Glen Powell). However, others find fault in the consistent predictability in the film's plot, with some finding that the lack of character depth is, although not a major hindrance, a drawback.

Twisters Movie on Netflix

Twisters is absent from Netflix as of April 2025. On July 19, 2024, the film was released in theaters and was later available on digital formats and a home media release. Twisters is available for streaming on certain platforms or you can purchase it on DVD and Blu-ray.

Is it Good?

That being said, even with its mixed reviews Twisters is worth a look. The visual effects in the film are good and the performances by the lead actors especially Glen Powell are great. A bonus is that the film manages to capture the visceral, chaotic, and unpredictably intense action of tornadoes. But the plot will be predictable for most people, and there is no development of characters either.

Folks who enjoy disaster movies or in any other case liked the unique Twister – Twisters is for you to embrace, at least in idea. It serves as a great experience with wonderful visuals as a nod to the original film that spearheaded all of this. As the film ends, Twisters seems like a modern disaster film, a combination of thrilling action and impressive visual effects. The film is, whether you are a fan of the original or have never seen the franchise, is one that will leave you on the verge of breaking out of your chair.
