Rathnam

Rathnam is a 2024 action drama film in Tamil that was directed by Hari and starred Vishal in the title role. Alongside Yogi Babu, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Murali Sharma, Priya Bhavani Shankar plays two roles: she is the protagonist's mother and the female lead. Hareesh Peradi, Mohan Raman, and Vijayakumar. The story follows henchman Rathnam who works for MLA Panner Selvam in Vellore.

Malliga is a medical student, one day Rathnam saves her from a rowdies who are trying to kill her. Malliga doesn’t just look like Rathnam’s late mother, Loganayagi, but his reasons to safeguard her becomes even stronger. Rathnam's assistance in assisting Malliga confront the dangers of her family's reluctance to sell their property to the vicious land grabber Beema Rayudu and his siblings, Subba Rayudu and Raghava Rayudu, touches on the film's vengeance plots, redemption, and the complexity of human relationships.

Rathnam Movie Explained

Henchman Rathnam is working for MLA Panner Selvam in Vellore. His life is changed dramatically when he saves Malliga, a medical student, from bullies. This leads Rathnam to protect Malliga because of his resemblance to Rathnam’s late mother Loganayagi. The film explains Rathnam’s past, showing him troubled story and his devotion to Panner Selvam. Rathnam and Malliga bond, as Rathnam fights against the constant tail of Beema Rayudu and his brothers who will go to any length to attain Malliga’s family land. The film includes action, drama, and screeming emotion, as the fights are high octane but the story is enthralling.

Rathnam Movie Reviews

Rathnam wasn’t struck with complete critical review. While some criticized the film's excessive gore, brutality, slow pacing, and lack of rhythm, others appreciated the action scenes, cast performances, Devi Sri Prasad's background score, and soundtrack. The film receives 3/5 stars, also from The Times of India’s Abhinav Subramanian: ‘It’s another typical Hari formula (action-packed, speedy, relentless), but even by his standards, the movie can be sluggish at occasions.'

Times Now, Manigandan KR also gave 3/5 stars and said, ‘Rathnam is not a very perfect commercial an action entertainer. It has its share of fault and limitation but it is truly what we said, that's an entertainer." Although there were more favorable critics, some critics were less than favorable.

Akchayaa Rajkumar of The News Minute gave the film a 2/5 star rating, stating that "Neither is she saved by stellar performances from Priya Bhavani Shankar and Samuthirakani, nor the plot twists towards the end of the story which would spare the audience from the headache and the potential ear damage the Rathnam might cause." Despite receiving mixed reviews, the movie did well at the box office.

Rathnam Movie on Netflix

Rathnam is not currently available for Netflix streaming. Additionally, Zee Tamil's digital and satellite rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video. The digital movie will debut on Amazon Prime Video on May 23, 2024. You may watch Rathnam on Zee Tamil or Amazon Prime Video as well.

Rathnam Movie Hindi Dubbed

The Hindi dubbed version has been named for the Indian audience. Amazon Prime Video offers Hindi dubbed version of the film, which Hindi speaking audience can enjoy the whole action filled drama. It preserves the very intensity and emotional depth of the original Tamil version so that the impact of the film is not lost in translation.

Is it Good?

It is the matter of preference whether Rathnam is good. If you are a fan of action packed Tamil films and love to watch the films of the director Hari and the heroes Vishal then you will like Rathnam. Being entertaining, the film delivers high octane action sequences and a good storyline (promised by the film). But if you want something more nuanced and essentially emotionally deep, Rathnam’s excessive violence and dated tropes will likely be off putting. Rathnam on the whole, is an average action entertainer that ought to help Vishal fans.
