Despatch
The story of Despatch is that of Joy Bag, a Despatch journalist for the struggling newspaper. The film starts out with Joy, a dedicated and principled reporter and someone who wants to make a difference. Yet during his research to write that article, Joy discovers that the GDR group, a very strong and corrupt organization, was involved in a much more hostile and destructive conspiracy.
The GDR case is accidental for Joy, who eventually dedicates the rest of his life to exposing the scandal, which only begins once Joy knows the extent of the scandal. This is a massive scam in which the GDR group is a part and it can wreak havoc on the nation’s foundation. With this, it ensnares powerful politicians and bureaucrats in the scandal, leading Joy to investigate. But, the more that he digs, the more that Joy finds that his life is under threat, and what's more, he has to go into hiding himself in order to keep himself alive.
With such danger, Joy is determined to expose the truth. Ameel’s friend provides him with a tracking software he’s been using to track other ‘projects’, and he finds out the parent company of GDR company, Stonedome. Firstly, Mr. Wadhwa, the boss to whom the current thread leading to Mr. Dhruw is linked, is also a co-conspirator. At the film’s climax, Joy has his hands on the GDR file and has to make the call to publish the story, mortally risking his own life.
Despatch Movie Explained
A typification of a complex and multi-layered film, Despatch explores themes of corruption, power, and the ethical dilemma journalists face. The first part makes the introduction to Joy and his dedication to his work. Joy treats this as a principled journalist who believes in the power of the press to hold people in power to account. But the scope of his investigation into the Shetty murder case raises it to much bigger and much more dangerous levels.
It’s the GDR group, a powerful and corrupt organization that has penetrated several levels of government and society. When he discovers the GDR case, Joy did not know of his discovery but when he realized the scandal had escalated so much, Joy became obsessed with uncovering it. It is the story of Joy on his way to facing bigger dangers to his life and going into hiding to protect himself.
The one big scene is when Joy discovers that his own boss, Mr. Wadhwa, is also caught in the tangles. The complexity only adds another layer to the story with this revelation, and Joy has to plot his way through the treacherous corporate and political corruption. Then the film goes to its climax when Joy finally gets the GDR file in his hands and hesitates to publish the story, arguing that it could cost him his life.
Despatch Movie Reviews
Reviews and audiences have been mixed concerning Despatch. While there have been mixed reviews on how the film’s plot is complex and how deep it goes, Manoj Bajpayee’s performance has been mostly criticized. Bajpayee, who had redefined Indian cinema with Gangs of Wasseypur, has been struggling with his 2024 films, say many reviewers. However, the storyline of Despatch is strong, but Bajpayee has been criticized for performing in a stereotypical manner and not reaching the heights he could have if he explored more depth.
But what is widely appreciated in the film is the direction by Kanu Behl. There is real tension and suspense in the picture, which is well-paced and has beautiful cinematography. The supporting cast, Ameel and Prerna alike, nicely round out the story with some depth as well.

Is it Good?
It's a skillfully made movie with an exciting plot. While this is not Manoj Bajpayee’s best performance, the acting, along with the direction, cinematography, and supporting cast, make this a worthwhile film. Such timeliness is precisely the reason the film is so impeccable at exploring corruption and the ethical dilemmas of journalists. Despatch is a film worth watching if you are a fan of thrillers that get to the core of power and corruption.
Despatch is a very edge-of-your-seat film because it’s a lively expose of the world of journalism and also the boundaries of what a man is ready to undertake to bring reality to light. A film about Manoj Bajpayee’s work should not be missed.
