Seoul has become a lawless badland in the days following an earthquake that Badland Hunters serves as a backdrop. While now this is a dystopian dead city, survivalist is the name of the game. Skilled huntsman Nam-San goes on a dangerous mission to rescue a teenage captive held by a mad doctor. But the doctor has taken up camp with his dangerous cultists of mutant soldiers and quasi zombies. The challenges of Nam-San's journey are frequent battles with bandits, super soldiers of the doctor, but he is determined and has physical prowess, making him a worthy opponent.

Such a world devastated by mega-earthquakes is inflicted upon Mad Max styled settlements where bandits run rampant and all are under the rule of a mad scientist. Those super soldiers arise out of the bizarre experiments of the scientist, driven by his love for his dead daughter. Ma Dong-seok, who plays Nam-San, is a former character stuntman turned character Actor who also makes for a former leading man in the role. He never lets the evil plots he finds affect his character, but is baffled by the woman he can never resist and the simple task of stairs.

Badland Hunters has been given mixed reviews. On one hand, action sequences are fully choreographed and Ma Dong-seok is getting praise for his role, whereas the others abhor the plot and the character development. Fast and very clear action scenes blend the same level of boxing, martial arts, and wrestling that you saw in John Wick. The plot, however, is described as predictable and the storyline meanders without any apparent point. If not for the flaws mentioned, this was a good movie to watch for its humor and for the charm of its characters.

Although the plot is predictable, and character development is missing, Badland Hunters caters to the viewers who are looking for a fun and action-packed night with friends. All things considered, Badland Hunter is a good addition to the post-apocalyptic genre, features a compelling character, and strikes a wonderful balance between humor and fierce action. Although it’s not perfect, far from it, in fact, it is still a great watch for fans of the genre and Ma Dong-seok’s performances.
